Address: 1610 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook

Phone number: 860-399-6427

Cuisine: The friendly Thai family who owns this popular spot makes sure that their homeland’s cuisine is well represented, but the menu also lists deli-style sandwiches and wraps, a variety of side and entrée salads, and Mexican dishes. Breakfast, including traditional dishes such as egg sandwiches, omelets and pancakes, is served from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Price range: $2.50-$11.50

Take out: Mindy K is primarily a take-out shop, but customers who prefer to eat in can take their food to one of the tables at the front of the store.

Kid-friendly:  The designated children's offerings include the usual chicken fingers, hot dog and grilled cheese. But, encourage the young ones to be a little more adventurous. The blackboard menu lists loads of interesting dishes.

Why you should go right now:  Because supporting local businesses is a good thing to do, and the family members who take orders and cook at Mindy K are cheerful and aim to please. During the summer season, the shop stays open until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, so this isn’t the spot for late-night dining. (The deli also is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) The food here is fresh and well-prepared, and the prices are reasonable. We like the Thai dishes best – basil chicken, Chicken Vientiane noodles, and chicken or beef curry in a creamy coconut milk sauce. They’re colorful, satisfying and properly spicy.
