Get Out: Five Great Things To Do This Weekend

Because It's No Fun To Stay Home All Weekend

There’s no place like the beach—sea spray in the air, sand between your toes. Oh, and don’t forget the tons of other people who will be there, too. You know, the ones who sit just a little too close, shake sandy towels your way, loudly shout at their kids or chase after runaway umbrellas. Maybe you like thrill of hunting for a spot on the beach. Or maybe a packed beach is just perfect for people-watching. But hey, those of you looking to switch things up this weekend are in the right place. Check out our picks for the weekend below:

1. 

WHERE/WHEN: Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday noon to 10 p.m. at Andrews Memorial Town Hall.

WHY GO: Live entertainment and music, pie eating and other contests, fishing tournament, chowder cook-off and more! 

PRICING: $1 admission per day.

2. 

WHERE/WHEN: Mystic Seaport from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

WHY GO: Boats, boats and more boats! Oh, and a car show from 1 to 3 p.m. and the  in the evening! Boat parade in the river begins at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

PRICING: Main event is free with museum admission.

3. FISH TALES, TUGS & SAILS

WHERE/WHEN: Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at New London’s Waterfront Park.

WHY GO: You’ll have tons of nautical fun! Check out live entertainment, meet several authors and illustrators and more! From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday, stop by Union Station to see Amtrak 40th-anniversary exhibit train—a fun addition to this year’s festival.

PRICING: Free.

4. THE VALLEY RAILROAD CIRCUS TRAIN AND BIG TOP SHOW

WHERE/WHEN: Saturday and Sunday this weekend, and the following weekend at the Essex Steam Train Grounds in Essex.

WHY GO: Ride a circus train, catch an acrobat show and partake in all the fun of a big top circus.

PRICING: Tickets are $25 each. Off-site parking is required.

5. BLUEBERRY PICKING

WHERE/WHEN: This weekend at Bishop’s Orchards in Guilford. Call (203) 458-PICK for daily hours and crop availability.

WHY GO: Blueberry muffins, blueberry pie, blueberry pancakes…

PRICING: Cost is $2.75 per pound if you pick more than 5 pounds; $2.99 per pound if you pick less than 5 pounds. Credit cards are not accepted for pick-your-own.
