Music at the Meetinghouse: The Dave Brubeck Quartet with Darius on Piano

Tickets are selling fast as Music at the Meetinghouse starts off its 2011-2012 season with a bang featuring The Dave Brubeck Quartet!  Dave’s son Darius will be filling in for his father at the piano as Dave is undergoing health issues, and the rest of the famous Quartet will be there (Bobby Militello, alto sax and flute; Randy Jones, drums; and Michael Moore, bass) to play Dave’s phenomenal hits.

Dave Brubeck, a recipient of Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, has been designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress and a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.  In a career spanning more than six decades, his introduction of odd time signatures, improvised counterpoint and advanced harmonies has made him one of the defining voices in jazz. His album “Time Out” with its signature songs “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk” has been placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame.  Now, 90 years old, he continues to be one of the most popular musicians in jazz.  Beyond the jazz world, his compositions for orchestra and chorus, ballet and chamber music have earned him a place in the American Classical Hall of Fame.

Eldest son Darius leads “The Darius Brubeck Quartet” and plays with his brothers Chris and Dan in “Brubecks Play Brubeck”.  During the 1970s, Darius toured with his father and brothers as a member of “Two Generations of Brubeck” and “The New Brubeck Quartet” and started his own band, “Gathering Forces”.  He has written compositions and arrangements for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra and continues to be very active as a band leader.
