When Your Flag Can't Fly At Half Staff

Despite the town's request that organizations and residents in town fly their flags at half staff, some flags flown at a 45 degree angle cannot, or they would hit the building. Here is the solution.

Some homes and some organizations in town, such as Madison Hose Co. No. 1, are having trouble doing so because their flag flies at a 45 degree angle. Lowering it to half staff would mean the flag would hit the building.

So Madison Hose Co. No. 1 intends to obtain a black ribbon or streamer to attach to the town of the flag, which the American Legion says is an acceptable alternative to flying the flag at half staff.

"The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag," according to the American Legion. "For a wall mounted flag, three black mourning bows should be attached to the top edge of the flag, one at each corner and one at the center."
