Price Of Admission? A Skein Of Yarn

Library's Knitting Bee And Yarn Swap a Success

On Sunday, February 20, 2011, the Friends of E.C. Scranton Memorial Library hosted a knitting bee and yarn swap.  Price of admission was a skein of yarn, and twenty people attended the event.  One of the items up for discussion was what ought to be done with the donated yarn.

The skeins could be used for a swap, meaning each person who brought a skein could take one other.  However, the group was keen on discussing charitable uses for the yarn, such as donating it to the Bradley Home in Meriden (which hosts craft fairs to benefit residents).  Other options discussed included knitting squares to donate to the Hearth, a group that makes afghan blankets for charity, or knitting booties and hats for babies in intensive care units at local hospitals.

Also under discussion were ways to help one another, such as sharing tips and tricks for skills such as knitting left-handed and knitting stripes in the round that will appear even on the horizontal.

"I like the age span of this group," said event host Marsha Brunelle.  The meeting included attendees age ten and up.  Brunelle added that she would like to feature a fifteen minute demo on a different knitting skill at each subsequent meeting.
