Oh Christmas Tree ... Oh [No!] Christmas Tree!

After serving the town faithfully for many, many years, the town's Christmas tree succumbed to recent bad weather and is being removed. But there's good news too ...

The Christmas tree on the Madison town green has served the town well for many, many years.

But town officials say that the recent bad weather, including the Blizzard of 2013, has taken its toll. Many tree limbs and branches were broken off the tree, leaving huge gaps.

"The tree has seen better days, by a long shot," First Selectman Fillmore McPherson mournfully delcared at a recent Board of Selectmen meeting. "It looks like it has to come down."

But there is good news, he said.

"A group of citizens has offered to take it down, remove the stump, and plant a new Christmas tree," he said. "At some point in the near future they will be coming forward" with a plan.

What's your favorite memory of the Christmas tree on the Madison Town Green? Let us know in the comments below.

Or Madison could do what so many other communities do, is to put up a tree for Christmas and then take it away.

I have a beautiful tree i will sell to the town. I bought it for $4 million last year. I will sell it for $9 million.

Frankly, the town's Christmas tree has been an embarrassment for many years. A sparse string of lights that go halfway up the tree with no attention at all paid to their placement. I see what other towns do with their trees and Madison's is a joke. My feeling is, don't bother to replace it if you can't take the time and effort to light it properly.

Many thanks to the generous citizens and businesses who are donating the new tree. The old tree is woefully misshapen and a new one in its place will be a welcome addition to our beautiful town.

There is a Christmas tree "in training" on the green that was planted in memory of Sidney Evarts who owned the Evarts Electric store in Madison. For several years, he supplied and strung the lights on the town tree, using just a ladder! He loved decorating the tree and loved seeing all the children enjoy it! It has been a fitting tribute to him that the children have been decorating the "tree in training" all these years! Thank you!

Would you take 8.5 million?

Rick. You hit the nail on the head with that comment. When I have driven by that tree I think the same thing. It's an embarrassment to the town
