Making Do With More Snow

Enough already. Enough with the snow. Enough with the power outages. Enough. But, still, Madison residents weary from too much snow figured out how to get their morning coffee and how to keep themselves amused ... thanks for the photos!

After the historic Blizzard of 2013 that left three feet of snow and hard-packed ice on the ground in February, the snow that fell overnight Thursday into Friday seemed almost like a vacation.

For many students in Madison, that was literally the case. The snow did cause some serious problems. An

And, while the day off may have been great for the kids, parents were left to figure out how to make sure they were cared for, for the day. Roads and highways were treacherously icy. The snowstorm caused many other problems as well. There were local accidents reported and wires down.

Power outages rose to about 2,000 mid-morning Friday

About 600 people lost power in the early morning, then that number rose to more than 2,000 later Friday morning, according to CL&P, or about 25 percent of the customers served in town.

Power outages were reported by Madison Patch readers on Sylvan Road, Fairfield Road, Fairfield Place, Bishop Lane, Beekman, Windsor Court, Canady Lane, and Lawson Drive. Horsepond was out early Friday, and was restored around 9 a.m., a Madison Patch reader on Twitter reported.

Outages in Madison were among the highest in the state. Madison and nearby Clinton were particularly hard hit by the storm, a CL&P spokesman said. Clinton had the highest percentage of customers out in the state Friday, at 38 percent. As of 7 p.m. Friday, there were still 30 customers without power in Madison, and 618 without power in Clinton, CL&P said.

Making do, having some fun

And, after a barrage of hurricanes, snowstorms, and wind storms over the past few years, some are learning to make do without. Dotty and Mont, as soon as their power went out on the east side of town, headed straight for the gas grill to perc their coffee there. Some in town have opted to install generators and/or woodstoves.

At Rachel Miller's house, the power went off, then went back on and they found themselves watching segments of The Ellen Show with some thrift shop dolls nearby. One thing led to another and ... thanks for the pictures!

Snowfall totals varied from about seven inches to more than a foot

As is typical of our long, skinny town, snowfall totals varied from one end of Madison to another Monica LaSpina reported 12 inches in North Madison. Linda Milisits Paine had exactly seven inches on Kelsey Place. Catherine Mary Venturini reported at least 12 inches up around her house in North Madison. In Scott Gyllensten's neighborhood there was about nine.

In Christine Bouchard's neighborhood in North Madison there was about 12 inches. Joel Stander measured about eight inches in his yard. Over on Scotland Road, Karyn Aungst-Topping reported about nine inches.

I'd say the storm left about seven inches in our neighborhood off of Neck Road and a year ago I would have thought it was a lot. But after the great Blizzard of 2013? No big deal. Luckily, we did not lose power. As of 9 p.m. there were still 30 people without power in town.

Here are some unofficial snowfall totals from the National Weather Service, as of 4:25 p.m. Friday
