Madison Homecoming For Christy And Adam Coppola (with Video)

Cross Country Cyclists Brave Downpour To Cheering Friends & Family

Cross-country cyclists Christy and Adam Coppola were greeted with cheers, hugs and flowers at the Madison-Guilford town line Saurday afternoon, where supporters were waiting beside a rain-soaked "Welcome Home" banner.

The couple began the day after an overnight stay at Adam's brother Paul's home in East Haven.  At 9:30 a.m.  they set out, joined by friend Meaghan Sheehan continuing to pick up friends and family along the way.   In Branford they were joined by Kiersten Robinson, Doug Dauria and Patrick Heenan. Christy's mother, Marie Bosson joined them in Guilford along with Adam's father, Paul Coppola, Scott Hunt and Scott Hunt Jr.

As they approached the Madison town line, Adam and Christy raised their arms to the cheers of a dozen more supporters waiting by the banner where they stopped to exchange hugs. Adam and Christy led the group in a brief celebratory dance before taking to the road again through downtown Madison to Adam's parents' home where dry towels and warm food was waiting.

Although Adam and Christy were accustomed to riding in light rain, they said that Saturday's chilly downpour was the worst weather they've taken on in their goal to bicycle through the 50 states.  As Christy wrung out her rain-soaked riding gloves inside the Coppola's garage, she proclaimed,  "I'm in no hurry to get back on that bike any time soon."

Adam said that Saturday's 21.2 mile ride brought their total road mileage to 5,062 of the estimated 12,000 mile trip with 25 states down and 25 to go.

Christy and Adam expect to stay in Madison until May 10th, when they will set off for Rhode Island and the remaining New England states.

The pair began their trip, dedicated to raising funds and awareness to donate  bicycles to residents in developing nations and for disabled veterans, in San Diego in January of this year. They expect to finish in early November and cap off their trip with a honeymoon in Hawaii.
