Looking For Something To Do With The Kids This Week?

From downtown Madison to nearby New Haven, here are some suggestions for you.

Vacation week in Madison runs from Monday through Friday. If you're looking for something to do with the kids, here are some suggestions:

Madison Art Cinemas is showing 42, the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play in American Major League Baseball, who wore the number 42 on his jersey. The movie focuses on the first two years of his life after he started playing in 1947. Check the Madison Art Cinemas website for showtimes.

Did you know that in 1997 Major League Baseball retired his number, making it the first number to be universally retired? The only exception is on April 15, when all Major League Baseball players and personnel will wear the number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson. So it also might be a great day to go see the movie.

If you want to learn more about nearby New Haven, here's a listing that shows how it is as easy as 1,2,3. First stop, the Yale University Art Gallery. Second stop, lunch. Third stop, shopping.

Of course, you can do that in Madison as well. Some of our favorites for lunch include RJ Cafe at R. J. Julia, the Madison Coffee Shop, Willoughby's, Village Pizza, and the High Tide lobster and seafood truck that is usually parked in front of Academy School. For ice cream, there is Smyles and Ashley's. All are located in downtown Madison, along with lots of great shopping options.

At Scranton Memorial Library this week, Snapshot Day is Tuesday, where kids can take a picture of their favorite book, their favorite place in the library, themselves reading, or just about anything else having to do with reading. They are then asked to share it on the Scranton Memorial Library Facebook page or email photos to scrantonlibrary@madisonct.org so that they can be used in a montage.

Other events coming up this week at the library include cupcake wars and a teen poetry. Check the Scranton Memorial Library website for more details

If you want to go to a museum, check the Scranton Memorial Library first to see if they have free or reduced-price passes. Options include the Beardsley Zoo, Mystic Seaport, and the Wadsworth Museum. Passes can be reserved online, and the library also has some reading suggestions to go along with some of the libraries.

If you're looking for something fun to do outside, check out our earlier story about the weather to find out where to hike in and near Madison.

If you're looking for something a little more daring than hiking, Empower Ziplines in Middletown is offering a vacation week special.
