The Howland Way Recovery Center

We are now accepting Saturday appointments.

It is typically thought that a child with an eating disorder is simply a teenage girl who is struggling to attain some unrealistic body image that she perhaps has seen portrayed in the media. This is NOT so! An eating disorder almost never starts out as a weight issue but becomes one for obvious reasons..You gain weight when you begin comforting yourself during difficult or lonely times with food. A more accurate understanding is that an eating disorder will begin to rear-it's-ugly-head during a particularly stressful period of time in the child's life. Perhaps, their parents divorce or separation, abuse, bullying, worry over leaving home for college, a break-up, a death in the family, or a whole host of other reasons! Yes, all kids have stressors in their lives and stress is something we all need to learn how to deal with in life. But when your child is armed with self-confidence and strong self-esteem they are less likely to turn to an addictive substance (Food,Drugs,Alcohol) to cope.If your child could use some self-confidence and self-esteem building contact Nancy or stop by The Howland Way of Guilford for more information. We offer a program which consists of 3 one hour (private) sessions which is geared toward raising your childs strength in these areas. Nancy is a Certified Life & Recovery Coach with a specialty in Eating Disorders and is affiliated with ANAD (Anorexia Nervosa & Associated Disorders Organization).
