Domestic Violence Awareness Day Oct. 17 In Madison

Here are some resources for victims of domestic violence.

The Board of Selectmen have proclaimed Thursday, Oct. 17th as Domestic Violence Awareness Day in Madison.

Kathy DeBurra, the president of the Women's Club of Madison, which helps organize events around that day, was presented with a proclamation by the board. She also talked about the importance of the event.

She said that Madison has become a model for other towns interested in educating people about domestic violence and resources for victims of domestic violence.

Rebecca Fernandez, from the Women and Families Center talked about the services that her organization provides, including sexual assault crisis support. She said victims of domestic violence are often also victims of sexual assault.

She said anyone needing help can call her organization at 1-888-999-5545 for English, of 1-888-568-8332 for Spanish.

Jen Welch from the Center for Domestic Violence Services also attended. She said victims of domestic violence also can call her organization at 1-888-774-2900. The 24-hour hotline also can be reached at 203-736-9444 or 203-789-8104.

Seth Klaskin, a member of the Board of Education and a candidate for the first selectmen's office, also made a suggestion for a resource that could benefit victims of domestic violence. He said the Connecticut Secretary of State's Office has an address confidentiality program that allows victims of domestic violence to have their mail sent to the commercial recording division of the Secretary of State's office, so that they can keep their new mail address confidential. The mail is then forwarded to the victim's new, confidential, address.

First Selectman Fillmore McPherson thanked DeBurra and the members of the Women's Club, several of whom were in attendance, for their work on this issue. He also encouraged residents to wear purple on Oct. 17th to commemorate victims of domestic violence.
