Consti ... WHAT? Park Name Subject Of Protest Sign Downtown

Just in time for the July Fourth holiday, parade and fireworks, Madison resident Jerry Birnbaum has posted a protest sign downtown designed to prod town leaders to reconsider the name of Madison's newest park.

Constitution Park was picked by the Board of Selectmen in part as a tribute to James Madison who helped draft the United State Constitution. The name of the park has been a subject of debate, an informal non-scientific online poll (which no longer exists due to the new Patch website), and conversation during town meetings. The committee that worked for years to develop the park has asked that other names be considered, but the Board of Selectmen has decided to stick with the original choice.

Other choices that were considered include

  • Madison Fields
  • Robert Schumann Park
  • Frederick Lee Park
  • Salt Meadow Park
  • Griswold Park
  • Madison Grasslands
