Celebrate National Trails Day in Madison

Madison residents can join in on an educational walk around Hammonasset Beach and trail maintenance at Rockland Preserve this weekend!

Reconnect with nature in Madison with an educational walk around Hammonasset Beach State Park on National Trails Day!

Madison will be marking the national event with natural history walk beginning at 10 a.m. on June 1, according to the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association pamphlet.

Join Ranger Russ Miller and Marcy Klattenberg for a natural history walk westward along the bike path and then returning along the beach (2 miles total). They will identify plants, insects, birds, and any marine life found along the drift line. Meet at the Meigs Point Nature Center at the eastern end of the park. Sponsored by CT DEEP and Friends of Hammonasset (FOH). Rain cancels. Pre-registration is REQUIRED. Questions and to pre-register: contact Ranger Russ Miller, (203) 245-8743. 

A total of 152 Connecticut towns will be celebrating National Trails Day on June 1 and 2, according to the Connecticut Forest & Park Association. 

Then, on Sunday, there's a Trail Maintenance group meeting at Rockland Preserve at 9 a.m.

Roll up your sleeves and help improve Singletracks of Rockland multi-use trails (www.facebook.com/madisontrailmakers). Volunteers will hike in and work on extending new trail. Roundtrip will be 1.5 miles. Meet at the Rockland Preserve Route 79 Trailhead (2333 Durham Road). Rain cancels. Pre-registration is REQUIRED.
