Drive Safe; Opt Voice Recognition Navigation System

The in-dash radio and now the in-dash navigation unit can be a distraction to safe driving

The automobile industry has been excellent in designing in-dash accessories that are readable and functional without being a distraction to the driver.  However, the in-dash radio and now the in-dash navigation unit can be a distraction to safe driving.  The reason is that the controls for the navigation are in a location that requires the driver to reach if steering wheel controls are not available.  Also the screen is located to the lower right of the driver’s field of vision, forcing the driver to look down long enough to see the necessary keys to push and instructions on the screen.    Due to the location of the radio in most cars making adjustments to the route or even switching systems from the stereo to the navigation can cause the driver to take his eyes off the road and his hand off the wheel if even for just a few seconds.  As anyone knows it only takes the loss of a few seconds of reaction time to result in an accident.  To maintain safety a driver should never take his hands off the wheel and his eyes off the road.  The use of voice commands through a Bluetooth or voice activated navigation to communicate with your radio would eliminate this inevitable danger.
