This Weekend: Beer, Book Fair, Winter Market, Journey, Music And Movies

What's going on for the weekend of Feb. 2-5? If we missed something, add it in the comment section and in our events calendar!

Here's what's up for this weekend!

There will be a beer tasting Thursday, at the , at 734 Boston Post Road, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., featuring the Brewery Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York. Selections will include Ommegang Witte, Ommegang Rare Vos, and Ommegang Hennepin Ale. Wine tastings also are scheduled on Friday and Saturday, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. 

On Thursday and Friday, the Brown School Book fair will offer great deals and fun events for book lovers. On Thursday, book store hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and then an internet safety speaker will be featured at 7 p.m. Also Thursday night, there will be a Luau Night with games, contests, and prizes at 5:30 p.m. Hours Friday are from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

On Friday night, you can at the . Up this week? Michael Moore's Capitalism: a Love Story.  Discussion following the movie.  Popcorn and refreshments served. 7 to 10 p.m.

Also on Friday night, check out Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m., presented by the Backstage Players Company in Clinton. Tickets are $15.  Tickets will be available for sale at Booksellers, Breakwater Books, Sachem Card and Party, Malone's Sandwich and Coffee, and The Little Store.  Tickets are also available at the door before each performance.

On Saturday at 8:30 a.m. there will be an eagle watch, sponsored by the . Advanced registration required! "Winter's cold brings dozens of Bald Eagles down the Connecticut River from Canada in search of ice - free fishing.  Last year, over 50 eagles wintered on the lower Connecticut. Their 6 - 8 foot wing span make the Bald Eagle the largest predator in North America."

If you'd rather get your dose of nature while staying warm and cozy inside, check out the The Friends of Hammonasset Bauer Lecture Series at St. Andrew's Church on Durham Road/Route 79, at 10 am. Saturday, Feb.4th. Christine and Todd secki from A Place Called Hope will present "live" birds of prey including owls and hawks. This is a free family program. Light refreshments are served after the talk. This is the first of four lectures in February.

The Dudley Farm Farmers' Market will hold its first Winter Market of 2012 on Saturday, February 4 from 9 AM to 12 PM in the Munger Barn at the Dudley Farm 2351 Route 77/Durham Rd, Guilford. Featured this month are baked goods, eggs, handmade crafts, jams and jellies, naturally-raised meats, pickles and winter vegetables. Madison's will be there! 

On Saturday night, you might want to check out old films with new music: "The Lyric Hall Theater Orchestra presents the 1920 silent film classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.  The film will be accompanied by live music.  Performances are Saturday February 4 at 7:00 and 9:00, and Sunday February 5 at 2:00 at Lyric Hall, 827 Whalley Ave. in New Haven.  Tickets are available for $10 at Best Video, 1842 Whitney Ave. in Hamden, or at the door."

If you're more interested in checking out some new talent, at the Goff House, 2 Barton Hill Road, in East Hampton on Saturday night at 7 p.m. HEAVEN SENT JOY is the story of Will Meeker, an architect in modern day New York City. One day, in the stands at a Yankee’s baseball game, he meets Joy Holden from Hoboken ... As Will and Joy travel their path of discovery, they are joined by a cast of characters, both everyday and some rather other-worldly.

On Sunday, you can take a Journey of the Universe at the Blackstone Library in Branford: "This 56-minute film in HD weaves a compelling story of the unfolding universe and humanity's evolving place in it. This engaging narrative combines scientific discoveries in astronomy, geology, biology, and ecology with humanistic insights concerning the nature of the cosmos."  See the trailer here.

I think there also is some football game playing on TV on Sunday? If that's your thing and you plan to celebrate while away from home, plan ahead.
