Angry, Roaring Lion In Chocolate, Hold The Sugar (With Video)

Original Technique And Breadth Of Work Results In Best Of Show For Mika Klos-Shakaid At Daniel Hand High School Art Show

Included among the many amazing works of art currently on display at Daniel Hand High School as part of its annual art show, there is one painted in chocolate syrup. Hershey's sugar-free chocolate syrup, to be exact.

Artist Mika Klos-Shakaid said she wanted to paint with something that would provide a contrast with the roaring, angry lion that was the subject of the painting, so she tried regular chocolate syrup first, but it didn't dry. Sugar-free syrup worked perfectly and led to a whole series of paintings in that medium.

That creativity and persistence were two factors among many that led to her portfolio being selected as Best in Show by a panel of outside judges at the Daniel Hand High School art show Thursday night.

Art Teacher Suzanne Gaskell said the breadth of Klos-Shakaid's work was a factor as well.

"She had photography included with her fine art portfolio," Gaskell said. "She experimented with different media. She also showed a great deal of strength in her portraits and use of color."
